The Cross River State Government through the Asset Management and Recovery Team has pledged their support to the Management of UNICROSS in the fight against land encroachment and other infrastructures in the University.
Speaking during a working visit to the University on Tuesday, March 25, 2025, the delegation led by the Special Adviser to the Governor on Asset Management and Recovery, Barr. Gilbert Agbor the issue of land encroachment especially in the Calabar campus of the institution is of utmost concern to the state Governor. According to him "If land grabbers are allowed to penetrate into the institution, what will happen when there is room for expansion".
He further stated that the state government has received petitions on the sales of some assets of the University without due process. He said "Additionally, there are petitions that the now dissolved governing council without following due process and advertising, sold some critical assets acquired over time. Again, this is in the realm of speculation and we have a list of these items".
The SA equally highlighted the abandoned New Cafe hall of the University saying "Other issues that came up for discussion is that there is an auditorium called New Care that has been awarded since 1981. Our responsibility is to get to the root of it and whoever is involved no matter how highly placed will be meant to give account".
The Acting Vice Chancellor, Prof. Francisca Bassey received the team and assured them of the enabling environment to carry out their duties without interference. She added that on assumption of office, she paid a visit to the Muri Munene in council on the issue of land encroachment and has also written to the state government to beef up security and look into the issue of perimeter fencing.
On his part, the Special Adviser to the Governor on Public Utilities, Engr. Jerome Egbe who is also a staff of the University appreciated the Vice Chancellor for her warm welcome and support to the team and expressed their readiness towards ensuring that all the pending issues are addressed adequately.
Highpoint of the visit was a tour of various facilities and structures on campus ranging from the Generator House where they confirmed that one of the Generator is missing and also the SUG bus was no longer available, then they moved to the New Staff Quarters where most of the land encroachment takes place, then to the Auditorium, New Cafe hall and Pavilion respectively.
While in the tour, Mr. Agbor asked the security agents with the team to seize materials of those working on the site of the encroached land and suggested that a monitoring team be put in place to ensure that no materials are allowed into the encroached areas where construction is presently ongoing adding that the team together with the Economic Adviser, eill send a memo to the governor requesting for security to be beefed up in the area to forestall further encroachment.
