Assoc. Prof. Esther Archibong Leads Transformational International Women’s Day Celebration in Calabar South LGA
Calabar South Local Government Area (LGA) witnessed an inspiring and impactful International Women’s Day celebration, spearheaded by Assoc. Prof. Esther Archibong, the wife of the Executive Chairman. As a strong advocate for women's empowerment, she used the occasion to uplift and support widows, vulnerable women, and persons with disabilities in the LGA.
Beyond her role as the wife of the Chairman, Assoc. Prof. Archibong is the Special Adviser and Focal Person for the National Social Investment Program (NSIP) in Cross River State. She also serves as the Chairperson of the Committee of Wives of LGA Chairmen in Cross River State, making her a formidable force in social welfare and community development.
Representing Her Excellency, Rev. Eyoanwan Prince Bassey Otu, wife of the Executive Governor of Cross River State, Assoc. Prof. Archibong delivered a powerful keynote address. She emphasized the urgent need to break societal barriers that hinder women's progress, referencing the critical focus areas of the Beijing Declaration, including education, health, economic empowerment, decision-making, and gender-based violence.
One of the highlights of the event was the recognition of outstanding women as Trailblazers, acknowledging their contributions to the growth and development of Calabar South LGA. A thought-provoking pep-talk session on Gender-Based Violence and Sexual Abuse further enriched the celebration, creating awareness and inspiring action against these societal vices.
In a remarkable show of support, 300 vulnerable women, widows, and persons with disabilities received livelihood support worth millions of naira, including 10kg bags of rice, essential condiments, wrappers, and cash assistance. In addition, Assoc. Prof. Archibong extended her generosity to the Old People’s Home in Calabar, donating food items and toiletries worth thousands of naira to support the elderly residents.
The event featured a vibrant march-past and traditional dance displays, drawing the participation of prominent female stakeholders and esteemed citizens. Also in attendance was Eld. Dr. Mrs. Virginia Ironbar, wife of the Chief of Staff, who encouraged women to push for progress, emphasizing that the era of limiting women to domestic roles is long over.
The International Women’s Day celebration in Calabar South LGA, under the leadership of Assoc. Prof. Esther Archibong, marked a historic milestone in promoting women’s empowerment and social inclusion. Her unwavering dedication to the cause continues to inspire hope and transformation within Cross River State.
