The President of the Nigeria American Football Association (NAFA), Babajide Akeredolu, has confirmed that the grand finale of the Nigerian Secondary School Flag Football League (NSSFFL) Season 3, tagged Aketi Bowl II, will take place in Calabar.
Speaking at a press conference on January 14, 2025, Akeredolu expressed pride in the league’s rapid growth and NAFA’s dedication to creating life-changing opportunities for Nigerian youths through American football.
He noted that what began with 20 schools and 840 students in its inaugural season has now expanded to include 13 states, 156 schools, and over 3,200 students. Highlighting the finals' significance, he revealed that 9 states, 18 schools, and 180 student-athletes will battle for glory in this milestone tournament.
Akeredolu praised the Lagos State Government for its pivotal support, particularly through collaborations with the Sports Commission and Ministry of Education, which fostered the league’s early development.
He also paid tribute to the late Ondo State Governor, Arakunrin Oluwarotimi Akeredolu, SAN, for championing the creation of the Aketi Bowl, a tournament symbolizing sporting excellence.
With NAFA recognized by the International Federation of American Football (IFAF), Akeredolu disclosed ongoing negotiations with the NFL and other global bodies to secure scholarships and international exposure for talented athletes.
Additionally, he highlighted NAFA’s quarterly training programmes, which have trained 955 officials since 2020, and unveiled plans to launch university leagues and national teams to further advance the sport.
He concluded by appreciating NAFA’s partners and sponsors, reiterating the association’s commitment to nurturing talent and empowering young Nigerians through sports.
In his closing remarks, the Permanent Secretary of the Cross River State Ministry of Youths and Sports, Samuel Egbala, expressed excitement over the state’s selection as host, assuring that all preparations have been finalized to ensure a successful and memorable championship.
