The Knights of St. Mulumba (KSM) Nigeria, a foremost Catholic Order, has commenced its 45th Supreme Council Convention in the serene city of Calabar.
Speaking during a press briefing today, the Worthy Supreme Knight, Sir. Dr. Charles Mbelede stated the significance of the event, which gathers leaders and members from across the country for deliberations on deepening Christian spirituality, fostering family values, and addressing pressing national issues.
The convention, themed “Deepening Christian Spirituality and Family Values - Roles and Challenges,” is scheduled to feature a Concelebrated High Mass led by Archbishop Joseph Ekuwem at Sacred Heart Cathedral, Calabar, followed by a formal opening ceremony.
Sir. Dr. Mbelede described the theme as "germane to our Christian faith," emphasizing the need for spiritual depth and family stability in navigating societal challenges.
Sir. Dr. Mbelede celebrated KSM's 71-year legacy, noting its commitment to charity, faith defence, and advocacy for good governance.
He announced significant strides in diversifying the Order's financial base, including successful ventures such as the Aura Gold Water brand in Imo State and a Bakery and Confectionery outlet in Onitsha, both of which promise substantial returns.
The Order also attracted $20,000 from the U.S.-based Kind One Initiative for articulated boreholes in semi-urban communities across Nigeria, including Ogun, Benue, Anambra, and Rivers States. "These projects are proof of the Order's impact in areas that should ordinarily be prioritized by sub-national governments," he stated.
Addressing Nigeria's economic challenges, Sir. Dr. Mbelede called for urgent reforms, echoing the Catholic Bishops' Conference's plea for more humane governance.
He lamented the state of correctional facilities, noting the alarming statistics of 84,000 inmates crammed into facilities designed for 50,000. He urged the government to prioritize radical prison reforms and improve inmate welfare.
Acknowledging the pivotal role of the press, Sir. Dr. Mbelede described journalists as "partners in the task of building the country of our dreams."
He stressed the need for the media to hold governments accountable, unearth constitutional breaches, and set the agenda for national growth and development.
