The Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences at Arthur Jarvis University, Akpabuyo, Cross River State, marked a historic milestone on Tuesday, November 26, 2024, with the official unveiling of Onion: AJU Journal of Multidisciplinary Studies. The ceremony, held at the University High School Hall, brought together an impressive array of academics, political leaders, faculty members, and students from within and beyond Cross River State.
The event was a platform to reflect on the Faculty’s accomplishments since its inception and chart a bold new direction. Described as one of the university's flagship programmes, the journal’s rebranding is seen as a significant step toward fostering scholarly dialogue and advancing multidisciplinary research.
In his welcome address, Dr. David Egbe, Acting Dean of the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, emphasized the journal’s strategic intent.
He described Onion as a medium for embracing diverse research ideologies and a testament to the university's commitment to academic innovation.
“This unveiling signifies our entry into the league of institutionally based, multidisciplinary journals that accommodate critical areas of research focus,” Dr. Egbe stated.
He also recounted the journal's initial produced under Prof. Offiong Ani Offiong, which became dormant after its first edition. Now revitalized, the publication boasts a sustainable framework designed to outlast administrative tenures, ensuring its continuity as a pillar of academic discourse.
Dr. Egbe paid tribute to Prof. Kyrian Ayiba Ojong, Dean of the Faculty of Arts at the University of Calabar, who played a pivotal role in his academic journey.
Prof. Ojong, who chaired the occasion, commended the university’s initiative, stating that reputable journals are essential for academic institutions aiming to excel globally.
“Institutional journals not only grow knowledge but also market indigenous researchers to the world,” he remarked.
Chairman Urged the faculty to prioritize online accessibility and international reach for the journal.
Prof. Grace Etuk, Head of the Department of Social Works, unveiled the journal, highlighting its unique and captivating name.
She emphasized the need to demonstrate Africa’s academic potential to the world, stating, “Let us show the westerners that we have something to offer without them.”
Representing the Cross River State Commissioner for Education, Senator Stephen Odey, Barr. Francis Oyije likened the journal’s impact to the health benefits of onions. He remarked, “Just as onions nourish the body, Onion will enhance academic growth for students and scholars alike.”
Dr. Stephen Ubong Andrew, the journal's Editor, expressed heartfelt gratitude to the university management, esteemed guests, and faculty staff for their contributions to the event’s success. He commended the Acting Dean’s resourcefulness and highlighted the faculty’s strengthened foundation for future achievements.
