UNICROSS: Alumni Heads to Court, Demands Dissolution, Reconstitution Of Governing Council

The University of Cross River State (Unicross) Alumni association has directed it legal team to immediately institute a legal action to stop further funding of all activities and claims of the governing council of the institution.

The association which stated this in a communique issued at the end of its National Executive Council (NEC) held on Wednesday April 24, 2024 and signed by the national Secretary, Njang Ndoma called on Governor Bassey Otu to consider immediate dissolution of the council.

It accused the council of incompetence  and pressurising the finances of the institution by calling for unnecessary meetings to draw sitting allowances for members at the detriment of staff welfare.

The alumni which called on the Governor to reconstitute the council to bring people who understand the workings of the University system added that for almost four years, the council attracted zero funds and project to University.

Reaffirming its support for the efforts of the Gov Otu's administration to reposition the institution, the association insisted on the supremacy of the law establishing the University, saying that all organs of the institution, including the governing council must respect the laws, at all times.

According to the communique, "the governing council as presently constituted is incapable, incompetent of doing its work and is not serving the interest of the University. Since the inauguration of the  council on the 6th of June 2020, the council has attracted NOTHING to the University, rather have been putting pressure on the finances of the University by calling unnecessary sittings to draw allowances to enrich members.

We call on the Governor and visitor to the University, His Excellency, Sen. Prince Bassey Otu to IMMEDIATELY DISSOLVE the governing council and reconstitute it to bring seasoned people who understand the workings of the University system and with capacity to attract funds, projects, and to formulate policies for smooth implementation of the "People's First Agenda" for the institution".

Continuing, the alumni called on "Governor Otu to direct thorough investigation of all activities involving the governing council members as it relates contracts approvals, execution and the resources expended in holding the unnecessary frequent sittings."

While directing its legal team to head to court to challenge all allegations of illegality against the council, it added that  "the Legal team of the association should IMMEDIATELY institute a LEGAL ACTION to stop the University management from further funding of council meetings, activities and claims until all issues involving it are resolved".
