A Catholic priest, Rev. Fr. Emmanuel Bekomson, has recently embarked on massive charity outreaches to the poor and needy around Edim Otop and Satellite town areas of Calabar, capital of Cross River State, Nigeria.
Fr. Bekomson who is a priest of the Catholic Archdiocese of Calabar and presently the chaplain of Our Lady of Perpetual Help Chaplaincy situated at the University of Calabar Teaching Hospital, started the outreach on 1st March, this year to mark his 43rd birthday on earth and pledged that if he has the needed support from public-spirited individuals at home and in the diaspora, corporate organizations and government, the outreaches will be sustained.
According to the priest, Fr. Emmanuel Bekomson, his inspiration comes from God and the desire to see people live well also motivated him to embark on the charity outreaches. "My inspiration comes from God. Also, I desire to see people live well. Times are really hard. People can hardly afford the basic things of life. In our little way, we have decided to distribute food stuffs to residents of our neighbouring communities. We really hope to sustain this initiative if we have some supports and we hope to expand our outreaches to even farther communities. We really need to help people survive the times."
The cleric was seen alongside members of his chaplaincy distributing over hundred bags of rice, gallons of groundnut oil, tomato paste, and other food items to residents of his neighbouring communities.
To step up the charity move, the priest has also started the distribution of free drugs to patients but based on doctor's prescriptions. This is due to the high cost of drugs and which is beyond the reach of many Nigerians who are poor and suffering. Also, in solidarity with Cancer patients all over the world, the priest had his hair completely cut and his beard thoroughly shaved and offered prayers for their quick recovery.
