Chairman Mining taskforce uncovers 2 mining sites, arrests 13 illegal miners

At least 13 suspected illegal miners have been arrested in the Umai area, Big Iwuru, and Small Iwuru in Biase Local Government of Cross River State by the Nigeria Police Force.


The suspects were arrested by the Cross River State Illegal Mining taskforce in collaboration with the Nigerian Police Force.


The suspects, who were arrested on August 22, were detained at the police station Akpet with their working equipment which includes; Shovels, diggers, and pumping machines. 


Th Chairman Mining Taskforce Engr. Ukam Ngwu Ngwu said their illegal mining could worsen security challenges and cause natural disasters in the community.



Chairman added “Our searchlight was able to identify a place in the Umai community where we raided 7 suspects caught in the act of illegal mining.


"The pit is poorly managed, poor pit designs management which may lead to pit collapse and can kill'.


"The site was illegally mining Tourmaline, Lithium, and other associated minerals which were not included or approved in their license, working above their Cadastral units (CU) and land area.


"There was no community development agreement between the companies and the host community and some communities are complicit in these illegal mining activities in their area because they rely on peanuts that come out of it and forget the challenges that may come thereafter" the chairman concluded

C'River State sets aside Jan 27 for Environmental Sanitation Exercise

The Cross River State Government has announced Saturday, January 27, 2024, between the hours of 7 am and 10 am as a day for environmental sanitation exercises across the state. The release signed by the Honourable Commissioner Ministry of Environment, Hon. Moses Osogi stipulates that movement of people and vehicles during the period shall be restricted except for those on essential duties.  He urged business owners and residents to partake in the cleaning and evacuation of waste around their surroundings during the hours of sanitation.  The release noted that defaulters shall be charged and tried by Cross River State Mobile Court.  Remember, a clean environment is everyone's business, together let's keep Cross River State Clean, green and serene.
