Communal Crises:Cross River Government Offers Medical and Relief Support to Waring Communities



In a swift response to the plight of the displaced and war Ravaged Communities of Nko and Onyadama in Yakurr/Obubra Local Government Area of Cross River State, the state government has sent a high-level delegation to provide medical and relief materials to underprivileged households.



The response which is to help curtail the suffering of the people and prevent possible disease outbreaks due to the indiscriminate movement of people from one place to another will help meet the immediate needs of the people and give them a sense of belonging.


Director-General of the Cross River State Primary Healthcare Development Agency, Dr. Janet Ekpenyong who led the team made up of the Director-General of the Cross River State Emergency Agency, Mr. Princewill Ayim, and the Permanent Secretary, Cross River State Ministry of Health, Dr. Iwara Iwara had a stop at the Palace of the Obol Lopon of Ugep to hint on the development.



Speaking during a courtesy visit to the Obol, Director General of the Cross River State Primary Healthcare Development Agency Dr. Janet Ekpenyong praised the role and timely disposition of the monarch that helped managed escalating tension in the affected Communities.


 She said the team had to spring into action to help alleviate the sufferings of the people and to offer prompt medical assistance, especially to children, women, and expectant mothers in both Communities.


She further called for the Federal Government and other partners to as a matter of urgency support the waring Communities in support of the gesture shown by the state governor, Senator Ben Ayade.


" I'm calling on the Federal Government through its agencies to respond immediately to the needs of the Nko and Onyedama Communities as a support to the efforts of Senator Ben Ayade in curtailing the hardship faced by these Communities.

I must commend Obol Opol for his immediate intervention in bringing peace and stability to the affected people, these would have been blown beyond proportion if these moves were not taken by the traditional leaders.

We are pleased to arrive here with immediate medical and relief materials for the people including, a team of medical experts providing services for the people, free testing for all diseases and ailments, consultation, vaccination for children and adults, provision of nutritional supplements for children and pregnant mothers".  Speaking to the people, she charged them to live in harmony,  as no community or society thrives in conflict. She expressed her concern for children,  women, and the aged who are usually the most vulnerable in such situations.

In his response, Permanent Secretary, Cross River State Ministry of Health, Dr. Iwara Iwara admonished the people to continually live in peace to enjoy the numerous Facilities of Health care and other benefits provided by the government for the people. He informed them that more support will be made available to them as the State Government is concerned about their welfare and will ensure to provide both medical and other relief materials to alleviate their present situation. He also highlighted all the services available to them,  while calling for peace. 


On his part, The director of the Cross River State Emergency Agency (SEMA) Mr. Princewill Ayim who made relief materials available courtesy of SEMA,  also promised the communities that they'll continue to get support from both the State government and other national bodies as the records of the damages caused will be assessed and a formal report made so the government will know where to further support. He informed them that those who have lost their homes will be supported to rebuild their homes and other interventions needed to restore life to the communities will be looked into.


The head of the Human Right Commission Mr. Remi Ajuga who was also present expressed displeasure on the recent happening and pledged Federal Government support and commitment to the people following the assessment that will be conducted. 


Other members of the team that visited include; the State Epidemiologist Pst. Inyang Ekpenyong, Yakurr PHC Director, Mr. Igri Arikpo, Mrs. Ekaette Obase of the CRSMOH AIDS program, and a host of other dignitaries.
