ASUU STRIKE: C'RIVER SPEAKER RECEIVES NLC MESSAGE, BACK NIGERIAN WORKERS

By Ofem, Jesam (Trinity)

The Speaker of the State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Eteng Jonah Williams on Tuesday received the Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC), Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), and Various labor unions in Cross State House of Assembly.

Williams thanked the leadership of the union for their patience.

Noting that NLC this is too late. When your child is crying, you don't need to wait too long. ASUU is your child and you waited for too long to react.

" What you are doing is your right and nobody would stop you. NLC is right, our children are at home for too long. I don't think anyone here is not affected, we all pass through this school, and we must pay attention to the school. Receiving this letter today, I will take it to the conference of Speakers on Monday".

Speaker concluded that the house will take it up, and they are not going to keep quiet, enough is enough, and he stands with Nigerian workers.

Earlier the ASUU Chairman Unical Comrade Edor John Edor noted that it was inexplicable that the entire educational sector is shut down from February 14th to this day 26th of July 2022 and the government has done nothing. It is not acceptable in any part of the world, they would not take it.

" At this point, we are now, there is nothing that the federal government would do than to implement what has been agreed upon, no need for further negotiation, no need for further information. There is nothing the government is looking for that has not been made available to them, is just to implement what has been agreed", Chairman remarked.

Also speaking the NLC state Chairman, Comrade Ben Ukpepi, said, it is no news that our children have been at home for about 5 months. Today, we have to mark the Nationwide protest in Cross River State to support the struggle of ASUU to ensure the fight ends.

"It is disheartening for the federal government to abandon education in Nigeria and also is disheartening for the federal government to cease the salary of ASUU for being on strike and for them fighting for the right of Nigerian children, the future of education in Nigeria. We are grieving and NLC has asked everyone to come out to support ASUU, either by compulsion or not, and let our children return to school. This is just a test, if the federal government failed to comply with ASUU, we would call all workers for an indefinite strike. NLC added.

Meanwhile, ASUU Chairman University of Cross River Dr. Patrick Ineji noted that the government is not interested in the educational system of Nigeria and the ASUU situation has attracted the public and NLC has decided to solidarized with us by conveying this protest.

Ineji concluded that the students have wasted a session by being at home and economically those doing business in schools are suffering and our students have gone into social verses that we would not have anticipated if they were in school.

" I should add that the government lacks the political will to solve what ASUU is facing. If they have a political will they will do something In that regard. He added.
