UNICROSS : Governing Council Intervenes In Alumni Crisis, Resolves To Conduct Fresh Elections

The over three years old crisis brewing in the University of Cross River State (UNICROSS), Alumni Association is finally coming to an end following the intervention of the Governing Council of the University.

The council, on Tuesday, March 1st invited both factions to a meeting at the council Chambers in the University's main campus with a view to finding lasting solutions to the issues.

The meeting which was presided over by the Council Chairman, Dr. Emil Inyang resolved that in the interest of peace, both factions should sheath their swords for a fresh election that will be acceptable to majority of the alumni.

Recall that the association has been enmeshed in crisis since the national convention that produced Comrade Eyam Abeng in 2019. Some members of the association last year who disagreed with  the Abeng's emergence organized another election to set up a factional executive to challenge his executives.

The council intervention which was applauded by supporters of both camps recommended that apart from the fresh election, the draft copy of the constitution put together by the Comrade Castro Ezama led Transition/Constitution Review committee be looked into and rectified by a distinct committee.

Consequently, a six-man committee headed by Comrade John Odaji was set-up to within fourteen working days, scrutinize the draft and present a clean copy for discussion during another council interactive session slated for March 21st, after which it'll presentatied in a congress for adoption.

Other members of the committee include, Barr. Ukam Ngwu (Secretary), Mr. Samuel Odey, Mr. Ofut Ogar, Dr. Joseph Otu and Mr. Peter Otu.

The council along with representatives of the factions also resolved that after the presentation of the constitution in the congress, the constitution rectification committee will be dissolved, while an electoral committee will be set up for the conduct of a fresh election.

Although, Paul Agwu, one of the factional Presidents said he needed time to inform his supporters of the decision, he however, added that he wasn't opposed to the resolutions reached.

While aligning themselves completely with the resolutions, the Abeng team, thanked the council Chairman, Vice Chancellor, Prof. Austin Angba and other members of the council for the intervention and pledged to support every move that'll bring about a lasting peace in the association.
