The Speaker of the Cross River State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Eteng Jonah Williams has tasked pioneer matriculants at the College of Nursing and Midwifery Sciences to focus on their studies and be law-abiding to the rules and regulations guiding the institution.
The lawmaker gave the charge, yesterday, at the maiden Matriculation/Capping ceremony of nursing students of the College of Nursing and Midwifery Sciences, Itigidi, 18th October 2021, Itigidi, Abi Local Government Area of Cross River State.
Rt. Hon. Williams, who was the Chairman of the Occasion encouraged the students to use the rare opportunity given to them to excel not just as nurses in the state but globally as the State Government has made the school conducive enough for learning.
The Speaker urged them not to allow their lights to go deem, but rather keep the flag of the noble profession flying because the lives of the people are in their hands.
The legislator used the opportunity to thank the former governor of Cross R8iver State, Sen. Liyel Imoke for laying the foundation and also appreciated the most digital and industry-driven Governor, His Excellency, Sir Been Ayade for making the dream a reality, as well as his dear wife, her Excellency, Dr. Linda Ayade, for supporting and always pushing for the best in health services.
"The enormous resources sunk into the college which facilitated the smooth accreditation activities with the grant of accreditation for ND/HND nursing programs by National Board for Technical Education(NBTE). Students, you have just started, see it as an opportunity to make your parents proud, and make yourself very competitive individuals globally because generations yet unborn would read this story and your names will be mentioned,” Rt. Hon. Williams concluded.
Earlier, the Member representing Boki II State Constituency, Rt. Hon. Hillary Bisong in his address noted that he is familiar with the activities of the nurses because of her mother's name, Florence.
He, therefore, charged the students to follow the footprint of Florence Nightingale, who is globally recognized for her love and passion towards the nursing profession, while pledging to support students from his constituency.
Also speaking the wife of the Governor, Dr. Linda Ayade, said expressed fulfillment with all positive emotion to be part of this success story.
The First Lady added that it is as a result of consistency and collective effort that these lofty achievements are made possible.
She concluded by saying no road is easy, especially with a Crown attached to it; while urging the students to keep their head up, and face the challenges by taking their studies seriously and being of good conduct, reminding them that there is light at the end of the tunnel”.
In her conclusion, she promised the students that "the best graduating student will be given half a million".
In her remarks, the Commissioner for Health, Dr. Betta Edu extolled the governor of Cross River State for the actualization of the college which started in the last government.
Dr. Edu restated that the Ayade-led administration shall continue to prioritize projects that will be beneficial to the good people of Cross River State and beyond.
The Commissioner noted that the school had been granted accreditation for ND/HND nursing as the first college of nursing and midwifery sciences within the South-South geopolitical zone.
Edu urged the students to focus on their studies, and shun all social vices, so that at the end they would graduate both in learning and character.
She also pleaded with the lecturers to see the students as their investment, and exhibit their expertise through the impartation of knowledge and discipline.
Edu concluded by thanking the wife of the governor, noting that without her, most of these projects would not seen the light of day.
The provost Mrs. Ruth Ita Ebong, on her part, requested more assistance from the government in areas like the completion of a building block for the general studies department, landscaping of the college, perimeter fencing, upgrading of library facilities, upgrading of science laboratories, establishment of midwifery component of the college, completion of the provost/staff quarters and students’ hostel.
Other notable dignitaries at the event were the State Commissioner for Lands, Prof. John Inyang, the Director General of the Cross River State Primary Healthcare Development Agency, Dr. Janet Ekpeyong, Dr. Margaret M. Opiah, Mr. Ekam Patrick, Mrs. Margaret Enang, Sir. Chief Aji Elemi Eko, among others.
