The Cross River State Universal Basic Education Board (CR-SUBEB) in collaboration with Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC) has commenced the second phase of leadership training for Head teachers in public primary schools in the State.
Speaking at the training centre in West African people’s Institute (WAPI) Calabar, the facilitator, Dr Eunice Nsor said the 6 days exercise was to train participants on how to effectively carry out their role as Head teachers.
Dr Nsor explained that while the first phase of the training which was done in 2020 focused on lesson observation, learning strategy for pupils, the second phase is training Head teachers on interpersonal relationship with staff and promoting learning time to ensure a smooth teaching and learning experience in public primary schools.
According to her “We are here with Head teachers from the Southern Senatorial District as a follow up to what we did in phase one sometime last year. In this second phase they have learnt ways to improve their interpersonal relationship with teaching and non-teaching staff in their various schools. They have also learnt how to promote learning time and ways to provide materials for teachers to aid teaching and learning.
Participants commended the State Government and facilitators describing the training as “insightful and impactful.”
One of the participants, Mr Jimmy Okoi, Head teacher Government Primary School, Calabar South said the training workshop has boosted the morale of head teachers and afforded them the opportunity to have a better grasp of their roles and responsibilities as leaders in their various schools.
According to him “the workshop has been really educative, we really appreciate it. It has boosted the morale of the Head teachers and also given us the opportunity to know our responsibilities; what is needed of us to improve the system of education in Cross River State. The facilitators have been exceptional, they are very knowledgeable and vast in the system. I have enjoyed the whole experience.”
Mr Okoi stated that the first phase of the training was helpful and knowledge gained was well utilized which led to some changes in schools. He added that with the second phase of the training more improvement will be done in the basic education sector.
The training exercise which held simultaneously across the state with 190 participants will come to an end today 17th April, 2020.
