Speaker Affirmed Cross River State House of Assembly Concerns over delisting of some state workers from payroll
Rt. Hon. Eteng Jonah Williams, Speaker of Cross River State House of Assembly affirmed Cross River State House of Assembly concerns over the delisting of some state workers from payroll.
Addressing the workers, Mr. Speaker commended them for their peaceful protest and appealed to them to continue the demonstration peacefully.
Eteng said we feel your pains everyday and we had started the process of negotiation with the executive arm. On two occasions, even two days ago we summoned Mr. John Odey, The SA payroll over the lingering screening that has lasted more than expected.
" To us now is a problem, and we cannot continue screening for a year, as a member of this government, I am embarrassed with this continues protest. The screening should have a limit, that has been the message from the house of assembly"... Eteng.
Speaker stated that the house has asked the executive arm to come out with a position paper, starting the stands of Cross River State Government and stop telling Cross River State House of Assembly everyday we are working on it.
Since we are part of this government, the blames is on all of us... Eteng noted.
"We are with you, we are happy you're taking it peaceful, this is the right way to go. We are supposed to be having sitting now but we suspended the sitting to attend to you people because you are dear to us. We are with you and behind you.... Eteng summarised.
Earlier a group of protesters gathered at Cross River State House of Assembly in Calabar at about 9:30 am today the 23rd day of September 2020 to demand reinstatement and salary payment for illegal eviction of 2500 employers from Cross River State payroll.
The protesters brought along with them placards which they paraded around with various messages such as " 2,500 of us delisted from the Cross River State Government payroll unjustly". Reinstate us now! "Cross River State Government, one year and one month now, no salaries". "We are crying for justice". "Labour is afraid of the government". "We were duly employed". "We all voted for you Mr. Governor".
The protesters, claimed that the state government decided not to pay them their salaries while labeling them ghost workers.
The leader of Niger Delta Activist Mr. Paul noted that the civil servant has utilised all the internal mechanism meant to go through to resolve this issue but to no avail and the civil servants here are duly employed with confirmation letters from same government.
